Whenever you remove a toilet for any reason replace the wax ring seal between the toilet and the toilet anchor flange sometimes called a closet flange attached to the floor. Repairing a toilet seal requires you to unbolt the toilet from the floor replace the seal and then put the toilet back in its original position. You will need to either spread out a blanket or piece of cardboard to. Sit on the toilet to help the new seal do its actual sealing.

Toilets should be caulked to the floor to prevent side to side movement that can break the wax seal and to prevent splashes or overflows from puddling under the toilet and rotting the floor. That doesn t always provide a good enough bond to the floor. Unwrap the new wax seal and place it over the flange on the floor with the round side up exactly centered over the opening. Lift the toilet and place it over the flange and seal keeping the toilet as level as possible.

Be sure to keep the toilet as level as possible while doing this. Ensure the bowl is level. Be careful not to over tighten the nuts as it may crack the porcelain bowl. Open the new seal.

This will help the seal actually seal. Lift the toilet and place it over the flange. Removing the toilet means loosening the bolts that connect it to the flange on the floor. Installing a new toilet seal.

Replace the toilet tank atop the bowl and align the shank of the bolts with the holes in the bowl. Replace the nuts.
